Folk ‘Til Ya Punk Records present: HOBOFOPO; Hobart’s Original Folk Punk Orgy. Yes it’s time for a folk-punk festival, and Tasmania is hosting. A bit like an old-fashioned folk festival, where there are heaps of gigs happening in venues all around, you study the program and run between shows catching your favourite bands. But this time all the bands are playing folk-punk, the venues are all pubs around Hobart, and no one’s going to tell you you’re being too loud.
With over 23 acts spread across 9 gigs around Hobart, North Hobart, Fern Tree, Grove and Franklin, prepare for an incredible showcase from the best of the energetic, original and growing Australian folk-punk scene. Plus there’s an acoustic luncheon in a café, a music industry pow-wow, a late night folk-punk DJ from the USA, and a late night chalkboard session where you can jump up and play. The Go Set have created a sound of its own by combining traditional folk instruments with distorted punk guitars & timeless rock n roll energy. The band has performed at Australia’s best venues & festivals such as the Forum Theatre, Falls Festival, Pyramid Rock, Queenscliff Music Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival, Apollo Bay & St. Kilda Festival. Aside from extensive touring schedules, stages have been shared with The Living End, The White Stripes, The Bouncing Souls, Flogging Molly, Wolfmother & Weddings Parties Anything.
The Ramshacle Army (VIC)
The Ramshackle Army are a 6 piece Celtic punk band from Melbourne. After supporting Dropkick Murphys around Australia in 2011 they’ve been back and forth between the USA and AUS with the Dropkicks, and also hitting the tour circuit with Frank Turner and The Tossers.
Handsome Young Strangers (NSW)
HYS perform a blazing blend of colonial, bush punk/rock that is uniquely Australian – tunes about bushrangers, shearing, droving, convict hardship, sports heroes, war veterans and other iconic Australians …. and all delivered with an arsenal of musical weaponry including banjos, mandolins, mandolas, dulcimers, lagerphones & fiddles to name a few.
Fox ‘N’ Firkin (QLD)
A celtic punk rock band from Brisbane which formed in early 2012.
Their sound fuses traditional/celtic/folk type melodies with a punk rock edge, made obvious by the instrumentation (Mandolin, Tin Whistle, Banjo etc. mixed with the modern standard, Guitar, Bass and Drums)
The Stragglers (VIC)
The Stragglers sound is a soothing and playful mix of folk, country and bluegrass, the combined effort of singer /songwriters Samara Cullen, Teresa Dixon (The Little Sisters) & Joshua Seymour (Cherrywood). All three offer smooth gravel & honey vocal tones and harmonies. The brazen swagger and punk attitude of the band has lent to them being affectionately labelled ‘the rat bags of country folk’
HOBOFOPO DJ – A Fistful Of Vinyl (USA)
A Fistful of Vinyl is Alec and John, two dudes with a shared passion for sharing music. For what is quickly coming up on eight years, they’ve worked tirelessly to support and spread the folk-punk scene the world over. With a never-say-die DIY ethos, they’ve conducted interviews and produced videos with whatever they can get their hands on, hoping to make the world a better place by contributing to the creative culture they love.
A Fistful Of Vinyl is broadcast on KXLU 88.9 FM Los Angeles. HoweverJohn happens to be in Melbourne at the moment, and coming down to HOBOFOPO to check out the Australian folkpunk scene, document some audio for the radio show, and spin some records. The Dead Maggies’ Dark Orchestra (TAS)
It’s no surprise that The Dead Maggies are playing HOBOFOPO, but they’re going to do something special for it. They’re bringing together 11 musicians, a narrator and a makeup artist to delivers a history tour of the dark and oppressive Tasmanian past in a show titled: 200 years of oppression, a history of Van Diemens’ Land. Starting with first white invasion, and finishing with today’s struggles, all strung together with narration
The Dead Maggies are folkpunk band who have toured Europe, Asia and extensively up and down the east coast of Australia. Their 2015 album ‘Well Hanged’ was featured album of the week on Edge, ABC936 and 2BOB, had several songs on JJJ and scored #7 on London Celtic Punks album of the year list for 2015. Some other highlights include having a Pogue come to watch them in an Irish pub in Germany, and having the stage manager of The Spiegeltent ask the audience to settle down as they were dancing too hard for the floorboards to handle.

Formed in 2010 Craicpot are Hobart’s best-loved Celtic folk-rock band. Every Craicpot gig is a party, their catchy original songs and revved-up renditions of trad numbers are perfect for having a good old dance to. A must-see if you like fun.
Quinton Trembath (NSW)
NSW-based Quinton Trembath recently took a folk-music detour from punk, playing playing piano accordion for The Button Collective, but has returned to his roots, utilising the fast paced energy and attitude of folk punk to sing and drink to the beauty of the universal intricacies of life.

Aiden “Jazzy Jones” (SA)
Recognisable from Dr Piffle and Runebilly Rattle, Aiden “Jazzy Jones” has been born from busking street corners & back alleys, to arrive into the corridors of folklore’s unbroken traditions. With a unique blend of old-time rag and contemporary folk punk, this rambunctious young singer has worn strings and bared soul to deliver his songs and folk tales.
Andy Paine (QLD)
Andy Paine has been roaming around the country for seven years playing his protest folk punk tunes everywhere from pubs, loungerooms and street corners to picket lines and forest blockades. His songs are infused with punk’s DIY spirit and folk’s belief in music as a force for building community and changing the world.
Jess Randall (NSW, crooked fiddle)
Jess Randall, fiddler of medieval-post-rock act The Crooked Fiddle Band visits Tassy on her own, to bring us a folky, down to earth clod of good gooey mud, and uses you for target practise.
The Dominic Francis Grief Ensemble (TAS)
Rogue Folk act The Dominic Francis Grief Ensemble is regarded for providing beautiful music with intense lyrics, capturing the soul of stories, guiding audiences through a traverse of deep personal relationships, leaving them with an internal sigh. A blend of accordion, guitar, ukulele and percussion result in a zany, aggressive and high energy live performance with punk, blues, Cajun, and Lithuanian influences. Currently a duo, but with plans to grow, keep your eyes out for the DFGE.
Hairyman (TAS)
Hairyman, is a hairy man from the depths of the forests of far south Tasmania.
“Some call me a singing poet, some call me a balladeer, some see me as convict punk, some as redgum revived. Stuffed if I know, I love to write about stuff from convicts to whaling, politics to love, and shipwrecks to war…and get a greater pleasure sharing my words to others by acappella. I have always loved stories; I am not good with a brush but with my voice, I can paint a picture for all to see.”

BrodyGreg (TAS)
BrodyGreg is an Unemployed Launcestonian Singer Songwritery Solo Acoustic Folkish Punk ™. Sad and shouty.
A big believer in encouraging a DIY scene in Launceston and Tasmania in general, he also started the Pay What You Want digital label Productive Pursuit Records in early 2016, as well as hosting house shows when he’s not living with his Nan. He spends most of his time singing yelly/wimpy songs about having friends and not wanting a real job.
All The Best (TAS)
All The Best are a Slop/Folk/Punk band from Tasmania. Former teen-heartthrobs for whom time has not been kind to, dabblers in punk and hardcore bands for years, singing short songs about drinking and other stuff. They played a bit as a duo, then they went quiet, and now they’re back as a four piece.
The Dead Peasants (TAS ex-VIC)
The Dead Peasants have been playing shows in whirlwind of line ups and locations from street corners to dive bars house parties and squats. They play a brand of fast paced, angry, acoustic folk punk with ethos rooted in the DIY scene.
Wilting (TAS)
Wilting are the new kids on the Hobart scene, they are a terrible impression of a bunch of other terribly impersonated shouty anarcho emo math punk bands, and they love it, so love them as they burst the folkery out of your ear drums.
Lordy Lordy (TAS)
Lordy Lordy are an all girl folk punk band from Hobart.
They do things to banjos, mandolins, accordions and fiddles that would make traditional folk musicians rip out there eardrums and beat us over the head with a tin whistle.
Playing songs about hangovers, cops and manky suburbs of Launnie, you might love them or just find them obnoxious.

And of course there will be more. Keep your eye’s out for THE HANDSOME YOUNG GO SET, a supergroup doing versions of folk punk and Aussie folk rock classics. GT MONGREL is a solo project from a Dead Maggie, ZENA MOHAMMED the frontwoman of Squid Fishing will bust out a solo acoustic set, and RYAN AND EMILY from Craicpot will perform as a duo at The Homestead folky gig. Plus… what folk festival would be complete without a CHALKBOARD SESSION.
